East Africa - former federation of Italian territories
in East Africa that comprised the colonies of Eritrea and Italian Somaliland (see Somalia) and the kingdom of Ethiopia. Formed in 1936, when Italian forces conquered Ethiopia, it lasted until the territories were freed of Italian rule by the British in 1941. By December 1942, the Italians had been totally defeated. Ethiopia restored its independence; Eritrea was placed under Ethiopian control in 1952 (becoming independent of that country in 1993); and Italian Somaliland, after a period as a UN trusteeship, became part of Somalia in 1960.
