5 Pounds Sterling 3.1.1961 – National Commercial Bank of Scotland Limited (Front: Coat of arms of the National Commercial Bank of Scotland (Est. 1959) surmounted by the Latin mottos "In Patriam Fidelis" ("Faith in Fatherland") and "Ditat Servata Fides" ("Preservation of faith enriches") depicting seated allegoric female (Caledonia) holding a thistle of Scotland and an anchor in her hands (crest), Scottish Gallowglass helmet, lion and griffin (griffon, gryphon) support the escutcheon, a sheaf of rye, a Glenlee barque (sailing ship) and a priest holding a St. Andrew's Cross or the Saltire. This bank was formed in 1959 by the merger of Commercial Bank of Scotland and National Bank of Scotland, both of Edinburgh. Ten years later it merged with the Royal Bank of Scotland.
